Japan is a popular destination for business and vacation travelers. From the United States, a flight to Japan is one of the longest non-stop flights you can attempt.

Duration Of Air Travel Flights To Japan

Flying to Japan from anywhere in the United States takes a long time. From Tampa, Florida, to Tokyo, Japan, the flight can take anywhere between sixteen and twenty-one hours. From San Francisco to Japan, the flight is about twelve hours long.

The shortest flight duration for air travel to Japan from any point within the United States is just under eight hours, from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Tokyo, Japan.

Tips For Air Travel To Japan

On any flight, travelers are concerned with the phenomenon known as jet lag. Jet lag makes travelers sleepy and sometimes sick. Air travel to Japan presents a high risk of jet lag because of the time it takes to get there and because local time in Japan is so different from local time in the continental United States. If you get jet lag on your arrival in Japan, it can ruin the first few days of your trip.

Preventing Jet Lag

Over 2,000 Vacation Destinations!

Most travelers recommend planning ahead to reduce or eliminate the effects of jet lag after an international flight like air travel to Japan. Three days before you are scheduled to depart, set you clock to Japan time and try to live on Japan time even though you are still in the United States. By doing so, you will reset your body’s internal clock so you will be ready to eat, wake and sleep on local Japanese time.

Don’t Sleep During The Day

However tired you are, do not sleep during the daytime in the three days before your air travel to Japan is scheduled. Staying awake will keep you on the same schedule as the Japanese people, so you can deplane and pick right up as if you have been living in Japan your entire life.

Avoid Alcoholic Beverages

Pay special attention to hydration while you are preparing for your flight. Avoid alcoholic beverages, and drink 48 to 60 oz. of water a day for the three days prior to your flight. If you have a hard time drinking that much water, remember that non-caffeinated or decaffeinated liquids count as water. Drinking water mixed with Crystal Light powdered drink mix or drinking a non-caffeinated effervescent beverage will provide you with the necessary hydration to reduce the effects of jet lag on your air travel to Japan.
