Many people are fearful of pregnancy and air travel, and often women do not want to fly even in the earliest stages of pregnancy. It should be known that pregnancy and air travel is not always dangerous, and in fact can be incredibly safe, as long as you take the proper precautions.

How Far Along Are You?

One of the first things that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to pregnancy and air travel is how far along into the pregnancy you are. If you are in the first few months of pregnancy you will probably feel too nauseous to fly, and if you are in the last few months of pregnancy, it is typically suggested that you avoid travel of all kinds.

You want to be near a hospital if you did go into labor, and the last place you want to be is thousands of feet in the air on an airplane which is why airlines are very strict about this.

Speak to Your Doctor

Another important issue on the topic of pregnancy and air travel is the discussion with your doctor. No matter how far along you are in the pregnancy, you are going to want to talk to your doctor before making any flight plans.

The airline you are flying with may even request that you have a written and signed letter from your doctor explaining the situation and telling them that they have deemed it okay for you to board the plane.

Health Conditions

If you have other health conditions that need to be taken into consideration here, such as gestational diabetes for instance, you are going to have to deal with this before going ahead with pregnancy and air travel.

There may be special needs that you have, and if there is anything extra that the flight crew is going to have to bring onboard for you, you are going to have to inform them of this at least 48 hours before the date of your flight.

By following these rules and taking into respect the important information relating to this issue, you will ensure a safe and easy flight. You can travel while you are pregnant, but you definitely have to be more careful and there are also many more rules to abide by. Also make sure that if you start to feel under the weather before your flight you let your doctor know so they can examine you and make sure everything is okay, both for your sake and the baby’s.
